Above are some of most easily accessible and
best places in Saariselkä to view the Northern lights. They are at
Kaunispää and
Kiilopää. You can also see the lights from within the village as well, but these two area offer some open space away from the village and conflicting artificial light.
The
best time to observe the northern lights in the autumn and the spring equinox, that is, in August-October and February-April. At these moments, the magnetic field of the earth is most vulnerable, so even a slight increase in solar activity can cause a visible glow above the horizon.
