If you'd like to experience some nature a little further away from Rovaniemi, there is the Arctic Circle Hiking Area which is about 25 km north of Rovaniemi, located on the east-side of the E75 highway. The primary trail heads start at Vaattunkiköngäs and Vikaköngäs, but trails can also be reached from the Makialampi parking area

The easiest way to reach the trails is if you have your own car or transport by driving North on the E75 and you will see signposts to the starting points of the trails.

The hiking area can also be reached by local bus which travels between Rovaniemi to Sodankylä or Kemijärvi daily. The bus stop at Lake Vikajärvi is only 200 meters from the Vikaköngäs trail head.

Have a look at the bus schedules on www.matkahuolto.fi to see current timetables on how to get there from Rovaniemi. The bus stop at the hiking area is called "Vikajärvi (Rovaniemi)"

You can read more details of the different trails available here.
